Save the Stone, 1968

Another part of olde Elland was demolished in 1968 – The Brooksbank Institute. This building, previously the town’s Grammar School, a hospital during WW1, an annex for the C of E School and lastly home of Elland’s St. John Ambulance, had a link to the school founded by Joseph Brooksbank in 1712. (The original site, yet to be uncovered, was in Westgate). Naturally the governors were keen to save the inscribed stone, which is still on view at the school in Victoria Road.
