An American in Elland, 1872

‘The other day a man met an American running on the low road from Greetland towards Elland Bridge. When he stopped, the American removed his pocket handkerchief from his nose, and delivered himself as follows:- “Wal, stranger, I came to the old country with a notion that the great Republic could beat the Britishers at anything; but I cave in, I du, with regard to skunks. There is a tarnation big one on there, and by the eternal he can stink some.” The American had passed a┬ánew bone boiling establishment.’
